Sawtelle Financial Management is owned and managed by Mr. Scott Sawtelle, ChFC.
Scott was born in San Antonio in 1948 to Robert T. and Christine Rogers Sawtelle. His father was a lawyer, his grandfather was a lawyer, and his other grandfather owned the insurance agency Sawtelle, McAllister and Frederich, founded in 1917. When Scott graduated from high school, he did not feel ready to go to college, nor did he want to learn the famous seven words “Would you like fries with that, Sir?” He joined the Marine Corps in 1966. Upon arrival at Marine Boot Camp in San Diego on August 18, 1966, he quickly decided that he was ready to go to college, but did not attempt to re-negotiate his contract with the US Marine Corps.
A Vietnam Veteran, Scott served with the 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division in the Western Pacific Ground Forces. He is a recipient of the Vietnam Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Meritorious Service Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation. After 13 months of slogging around the northern portion of I Corps, Republic of Vietnam, he was honorably discharged. Once he was back at home, he went to college and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972 with a BA in Psychology.
He began his financial career in the life insurance business in 1973, where he had the opportunity to learn about tax law and rejection. He received his Series 7 general securities license in 1975, and completely changed his career from life insurance to selling securities in 1981, joining a firm based in Houston called Financial Synergies Equities, Inc. He became a partner in that firm and when it was sold in 1993, he decided he was tired of selling securities for a commission and wanted to give investment advice only. He gave up his Series 7 securities license and became registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as an Investment Advisor. Scott is a Chartered Financial Consultant, a designation he received from the American College after taking and passing 10 tests regarding financial planning and investments.
